Rescue 7 joins Pickleball Canada to help save lives and further health and safety

MARKHAM, ON – January 24, 2024 – Rescue 7 Inc., a leading national health and safety training company which specializes in first aid, CPR and AED training and distributing automated external defibrillators (AEDs), announced today that it has signed a multiyear partnership with Pickleball Canada. As part of the agreement, Rescue 7 is committed to helping pickleball players across the country enhance safety and provide related training.

The partnership is set to kick off this week on January 26 at Rescue 7’s 8th annual Winter Carnival  at the Heights of Horseshoe Ski & Country Club located in Barrie, Ontario. All proceeds for this annual event go towards the Dave Mounsey Memorial Fund and the Rescue 7 Forward Hearts Program – both programs donate defibrillators to charities and non-profit organizations across Canada.

“The game of pickleball has taken Canada by a storm, and it is incredible to see the sport gaining popularity in cities and towns across the country. Sport and safety go hand in hand, and Rescue 7 is committed to keeping Canadians safe as they hit the court,” said John Collie, CEO at Rescue 7. “We are thrilled to partner with Pickleball Canada and we are excited to see what we can accomplish together.”

According to Rescue 7’s research, cardiac arrest occurs roughly once every seven minutes heightening the importance around preparation, education, and training for a sport surging on and off the court.

Even among youth, Pickleball Canada’s latest data reflects an approximately 50% increase in participation among high school graduates in pickleball, and nearly a 70% increase among those with less than a high school education. Given these statistics, safety, CPR training, and knowledge around AEDs is paramount for all age groups. To date, Rescue 7 and their partner Coromed in the US have deployed 200,000+ units across North America and are featured in multiple key retailers and facilities across the country.

“Pickleball Canada is very pleased to welcome Rescue 7 as our latest partner in the health and safety training category,” said Val Vollmin, President of Pickleball Canada. “As a leading health and safety training organization, this company should be a great addition for our affiliated clubs to be equipped with the necessary tools and resources to save lives! Pickleball Canada is looking to bringing RESCUE 7’s health & safety tips tothe pickleball community in Canada.”

In the coming days, Rescue 7 will begin rolling out a preferred pricing program for the AEDs for Pickleball Canada member clubs along with CPR, AED, and first aid training to collectively start today, in saving a life tomorrow.

Vernon Pickleball Association’s New Officiating Program

The Vernon Pickleball Association (VPA) is located in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia. The VPA is home to over 1100 members with 300 on the waitlist. In 2023 the association was voted the Top Pickleball Club in Canada by Pickleball Today.

The VPA runs three one day tournaments and one three-day sanctioned tournament each year.  Additionally, they hosted the first B.C. Championships in 2023 with 620 competitors. In order to successfully run provincials, they utilized 40+ officials. At the time the VPA only had three accredited referees. And so, in preparation for the 2023 Provincial Championships a referee training program occurred that resulted in the number of accredited referees in the VPA reaching 14 by the end of year.  There were many bumps and bruises along the way, and lots of learning of what not to do!  From this experience the VPA knew that it should create a referee training program that facilitated the development of new referees in a supportive environment in preparation for hosting the 2024 Pickleball Canada Western Regional Championships 25 – 29 July, 2024.

Starting in October of 2023 Richard Chambers the Tournament Director at the VPA recruited Shannon McClean and Suzan Ross (both Level 2 credentialed referees at VPA) as coordinators of the referee training program. As well, five Level 1 referees volunteered to act as mentors.

On November 2, 2023, the program launched, and seventeen potential referees began training. During the first few lessons they learned the basics of the program such as how to hold a clipboard and how to call the score. These basic steps were taken slowly in order for the new referees to develop confidence in their abilities. From there they started to include the script and brought in time-out and game procedures followed by faults and most recently they introduced disciplinary actions and procedures.

“Once people gained more confidence after the first few lessons people really started enjoying it and having fun. They started to realize the impact referees have on their club”, stated Suzan Ross one of the Coordinators for the Referee Program.

Many of the referees in training have found this program to be very helpful and appreciate the steps the VPA has taken to create a supportive program that has built their confidence.

“I am thrilled the VPA is holding a referee training program. They are making a huge effort to train new recruits for our organization, and they are taking their time to give us a better understanding of what it takes to become a new Referee”, said Ziggy Kreipe, one of the referees in training.

This program has not only been a big help for new referees but also for the referee mentors as it puts their knowledge to the test in guiding the referees in training. It assists the mentors in keeping their skills fresh for tournament season.

“It has been gratifying to see these trainees grow their skills so that they will be so much more prepared for tournament time. Plus, my own knowledge base has grown, and I too have benefitted as we discuss as a group the game procedures. In my opinion it’s a fun, casual learning environment that has and will benefit everybody”, said Referee Mentor Sandy Vaughan Hastie.

OTTAWA, Ontario (November 3, 2023) – Pickleball Canada, the national governing body for pickleball in Canada, has joined with other national federations to introduce and activate the Global Pickleball Federation.

With its responsibility, authority and accountability as the international federation for pickleball, GPF promotes, leads and supports the growth and development of pickleball as a sport for all, for life.  Priorities include gaining recognition by the International Olympic Committee as the unifying global governing body for the sport of pickleball and securing inclusion of pickleball in the Olympics, Paralympics and other major, multi-sport international competitions.

The GPF will ensure its members have access to best practices and other practical resources that enable growth and development within their regions and communities.  For member countries, the GPF will arrange access to equipment, official rules, educational and instructional programs, an active ambassador network, international tournaments, equipment standards and other valuable tools.

“An urgent need existed for a dynamic, effective and respected international governing body that is led by member countries in alignment with their continental federations,” says Javier Regalado, President of the Pickleball Federation of the Americas and GPF Board Member. “The countries committed to the GPF represent approximately 95% of pickleball members in the world.”

“Today’s launch of the Global Pickleball Federation is a huge step forward for pickleball,” says Val Vollmin, President of Pickleball Canada. “Together with our colleagues in countries around the globe, we will create a big, welcoming tent under which we can truly unify and grow pickleball. We now have the opportunity to work in collaboration to promote and advance pickleball as a marvelous, inclusive sport.”

The path for GPF membership is application through the respective continental federation to meet their membership requirements.  Upon completion, member applications will be evaluated by both a national federation’s continental federation and the Global Pickleball Federation. An online application for Global Pickleball Federation membership is available at www.globalpickleballfederation.org.

Pickleball Canada Celebrates 60,000 Members

In early October, Pickleball Canada (PCO) reached 60,000 members! This is a huge milestone for the sport of pickleball in Canada.

At the end of 2022 PCO had 43,490 members and in June of 2023 PCO reached 50,000 members. Pickleball Canada has seen incredible growth over the past couple of years and is working toward continuing this growth throughout the remainder of the year and beyond.

Pickleball is captivating many Canadians from all over this vast country. In January of 2023 PCO commissioned the same national research company as recent years to survey Canadian households. It was found that there was a significant increase in the number of Canadians playing pickleball for the competition within the game (27% in January 2023, compared to just 18% in January 2022). The growth on the competitive side is attributable to women, for whom there was a 170% increase with competitions being a key driver for playing pickleball.
