Officiating Program Process


The Officiating Program consists of the following:

Process:

There are 4 distinct phases in the process from interested individual to fully certified referee. An individual must be a PCO member to become a registered official.
To support the PCO Officiating Program a number of training aids and supporting documents have been prepared. They are all available to PCO members only -LOGIN is required to access them.
 
Contact your club or province/territory to arrange training and/or vetting.

 

1. Previous Qualification as PCO Scorekeeper or Associate Referee - Recertification as Level 1 or Level 2

The standards for Level 1 Official are new and the Level 2 Official standard has been upgraded. Combine that with the
passage of time and the new or changed 2020 IFP Rulebook, all Scorekeeper and Associate Referees must upgrade to maintain status
as a pickleball game official.
 
The upgrade process should include:
  • A review and verification by online test of the 2020 IFP Rulebook knowledge. The review portion may be self driven.
  • Attendance in an 'in class' review of Officiating Best Practices and verified by successful completion of the Officiating Best Practices online test.
  • Additional on court training or review as necessary
  • Test marks to be to the Level 1 Official and Level 2 Official standards, as appropriate.

2. No Experience - Entry to Level 1

  • Self study the rules of pickleball - reference the 2020 IFP Rulebook
  • Score 70% or better on the Officials Rules Test online
  • Attend an Officials Best Practices training session
  • Score 70% or better on the Officials Best Practices Rules Test online
  • Complete the requisite practice component
  • Arrange for vetting by a Level 2 trainer
 
It is best that these steps be completed in chronological order.
 

3. Moving from Level 1 to Level 2

  • Confirm minimum number of games officiated
  • Increase awareness the rules of pickleball - reference the 2020 IFP Rulebook
  • Score 80% or better on the Officials Rules Test online
  • Consider attending an Officials Best Practices training or update session. Minimum would be self review of the Officiating Best Practises Slide presentation and a thorough review of the Officiating handbook.
  • Score 80% or better on the Officials Best Practices Rules Test online
  • Complete the requisite practice component
  • Arrange for vetting by a Level 2 Trainer

4. Moving from Level 2 to Level 3

  • Confirm minimum number of games officiated
  • Increase awareness the rules of pickleball - reference the 2020 IFP Rulebook
  • Score 90% or better on the Officials Rules Test online
  • Consider attending an Officials Best Practices training or update session. Minimum would be self review of the Officiating Best Practices Slide presentation and a thorough review of the Officiating handbook.
  • Score 90% or better on the Officials Best Practices Rules Test online
  • Score 90% or better on the Officials Line Judges Test online
  • Complete the requisite practice component
  • Contact your Club or Provincial authority to arrange for vetting
